I see midwives and I do love their approach but technically nothing happens for appointments until 12 weeks but I’m seeing so many people talk about so many things.
They did order prescreen bloodwork but they said it only tests for stuff like stds and diseases and I think like vaccines or something.
I’m kind of annoyed by this. Is this normal? I don’t want to wait until 12 weeks to know literally anything.

I had my daughter in Canada & went with a midwife practice. I had an early scan because I had a previous ectopic pregnancy but otherwise wouldn’t have been scanned until 11 weeks I think? They didn’t do HCG as standard but I could’ve requested it. All going well I’ll be having this baby in Ireland & as standard you don’t have your first scan or appointment until 12ish weeks. Again if you have a history of ectopic or miscarriage you can self refer to the early pregnancy unit for an early scan. Why don’t you ask them if you can have an earlier appointment?

My OB office has a midwife practice within it. Maybe you could find something to give you a middle ground?

In Canada, there's such a wait for everything. 12-14 weeks for first ultrasound. Barely any doctors for care either !

I think it’s common to have less ultra sounds during pregnancy when you’re managed by midwife’s. But some drs don’t do many ultrasounds throughout pregnancy either. It depends on the practice

my current Ob-Gyn won't schedule my first prenatal appointment until past the 10 week mark. scheduled for our first appointment which will include an ultrasound 11 weeks and 2 days.
with my first pregnancy it was similar different doctor but they wouldn't schedule anyone until after the 8 week mark I think I got in about 9 weeks that time around.
these doctors were not midwives but very conventional OBGYNs that delivered at a large Hospital system. because I have no risk factors with either pregnancy there was no need for testing before that point (though it's a bit hard to wait!)
I think often times the people most active on these threads are also active with fertility treatments so it can be a little misleading if someone has been working with a fertility specialist or an OBGYN trying to get pregnant or if you are just a typical pregnancy with no known risk factors.

I’m on my 5th and most of my doctors or midwives be my seen me until 10 to 12 weeks because there’s nothing much to do. They won’t do fetal Doppler cuz you can’t pick anything up that early and they only other tests they might do can be done just as easily at 12 weeks. The sad fact is that if there is anything wrong that early, there’s not a lot of ways they can necessarily see or do anything about it. It’s not that they don’t care, more that there’s just so little they can even do for you. Unless you need medication or something for morning sickness.

I’m with midwives and we did a 8 week scan, and they offer the NIPT bloodwork at 10 weeks which I am doing and then I asked and they ordered a 12 week scan for the NT scan. You should be able to ask for the NIPT

this is common practice In ireland, I saw my usual doctor and got a private scan at 7 weeks to confirm heartbeat and progress as it was a ivf pregnancy but the next scan is after 12 weeks and I agree, waiting is tough but keep busy, I think reason is chance of miscarriage is highest before the 12 wk mark and then they can access everything from there onwards

Nothing at all until 12 weeks is a bit unusual. Some things like thyroid function should really be tested earlier, because hypothyroidism in pregnancy is so common, and it can have negative consequences for the baby. I know that many people are concerned about “unnecessary” medical interventions, but making sure you’re ok is not a medical intervention. An ultrasound at about 8-9 weeks is also very common just to make sure the pregnancy is intra-uterine.
